WHAT DO WE DO?
Financial skills and digital skills are crucial for modern society. With large banks dominating the financial sphere and the growth of technology moving life to the cloud, the need for these skills has increased substantially. Most youth today lack basic knowledge about the financial, governmental and monetary structures that govern our adult life. Additionally, technology has been advancing at such a pace that some individuals struggle to keep up.
For most of us, we learn these skills through friends and family. But where do you go if you don’t have these networks? Who can you ask to teach you these skills?
Square One Skills is a newly incorporated not-for-profit that fills this gap. Run by passionate young Australians with the support of community partners, we empower Australia’s youth to educate, support, and engage all individuals with the sustainable lifelong financial and digital skills needed to improve their own lives and the lives of others.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
We harness the passion and energy of Australia’s youth and the structures and value of existing programs to provide long-term sustainability for each individual through the education of necessary of life skills.
We partner with local community organisations and existing programs with a focus on providing long-term sustainability and young passionate volunteers.
We also seek to partner with corporate sponsors to help empower our own volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to be able to bring these skills to others.
In March 2019, we will be starting our own flagship programs focusing on digital and financial literacy skills. For our financial literacy division, this includes our Hackathon Competition, our campus-based Mentorship Program, and our Fin Lit Boot Camp. For our digital literacy division, this includes our youth-run educational programs to Australia’s older generations.
We seek to consolidate the resources available online and through existing organisations to provide a tailored educational program to the needs of each individual. This includes making available this information through our online platforms to help every individual access this knowledge.
The idea of Square One Skills was first created on the campus of Sydney University in 2018. Starting with a small team of university students passionate about making a difference through sustainable educational programs, they sought ways to harness the full potential of Australia’s youth to improve people’s lives.
Thus, Square One Skills was founded in July 2018 as a newly incorporated not-for-profit and University of Sydney Union affiliated Society registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission. We are run by a growing team of passionate, dedicated, and energetic young volunteers who are keen to improve the lives of others and make a difference at the individual level of the community.
Square One Skills consists of two divisions.
